Last month, we were asked by sporting brand Nike to play some music for a football tournament in various places around Berlin. The tournaments were strictly street style and the boys playing were all local Kiez kids defending “their” respective cages. The tournaments were crazy: street tricks, rough battling and lots of sportsmanship were to be seen. Effectively, we really enjoyed hanging out with a different crowd. The kids were awesome– from Savignyplatz to Adalbertstraße, they hung around with us, showed us their various ball tricks, inquired about our playlists and held up their “gang signs” for us.
Besides making music, I also documented the whole tournament and ended up picking out some portraits and scenes that really capture the good spirit of these kids (you know, they weren’t really “kids”, but they just behaved in the sense of kids… really cool and sweet!). It was a lot of fun to hang around there, and we’re all looking forward to the next cage match!
