House of Small Wonder

Asian inspired breakfast and brunch café, located in one of Mitte's rather remote bermuda triangles of good food, has finally opened its doors to the public.

A boho-vintage café serving American brunch with a twist of Japanese cuisine in Berlin-Mitte. Wait- what? You heard right: House of Small Wonder is the work of husband and wife duo Shaul Margulies and Motoko Watanbe, who have managed to fuse American and Japanese dishes successfully in their first café in Brooklyn, New York. Their new franchise has only recently opened in Berlin-Mitte near Friedrichstraße. In a cozy environment full of light and plants, snacks, breakfast, brunch and lunch á la carte with a twist will be served.

While the food sounds enticing enough, it’s the super cozy interior design that really draws attention and sets the mood. The space, flooded with natural light on the 2nd floor opposite of the Kalkscheune, is decorated with vintage elements, tall and small plants, and has you feeling as if in a familiar living room. A good start if you ask me.

The food is made from organic produce and ranges from very classic café snacks (homemade bread, croissants, pastries) to sometimes downright outlandish (but ever so delicious) Japanese food like the hamburger with Gruyère or the Okinawan Taco Rice. I like a typical sweet breakfast and therefore completely lost it at the croissant that was prepared like French toast, but the Vegetable Yaki Udon Noodles with a fried egg on top was quite intriguing as well (although – not my style, I have to admit). Nothing I would recommend for an early breakfast, but definitely a kick-ass brunch option for someone who usually detests brunch (which is me).

House of Small Wonder is sure to find lots of fans among the adventure seeking, ever hungry Mitte crowd of Berlin. Also, the Friedrichsstadtpalast-area has been a Bermuda triangle of good lunch options. I trust that House of Small Wonder, hidden as it may be, will know how to fill the culinary void. The coffee, by the way, is great.

But that’s not all. Apparently, House of Small Wonder is just the beginning of a new culinary journey to the far east. There is supposed to be another restaurant opening up in January on the same premises that will cater to all the senses and serve Japanese haute cuisine. That’s something that Berlin has been seriously missing, and we’re looking forward to our first visit already.
