After the liberating chaos and vast possibilities at the Universität der Künste I was prepared to see everything. The location – the corner house on Oranienplatz which used to be a shopping mall – was chosen perfectly to put the artwork on display.
Back then, this landmark protected house was nothing but empty space, an offsite event location and victim to various vandalism related crimes. Today, this corner house is where the new Orania hotel resides. Kreuzberg – a proper victim of its time? Art and culture displaced by the dominating industry of urban tourism?
The Weißensee Rundgang (the annual exhibition of that year’s art graduates) was the last event I went to in this place. I’m not sure I’ll ever have a reason to visit Orania, a hotel for rich people who want to “experience” Kreuzberg. Is there anything left to experience anyway?
